Melanie Trowbridge

Chief Human Resources Officer

As the Chief Human Resources Officer, Melanie Trowbridge provides senior human resource leadership to the laboratory in policy and program development, direction, and resource stewardship in all areas related to the human resources (HR) function. She directs HR operations and implementation so that FRIB, as a U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science user facility and as an MSU educational program that receives federal financial assistance, is efficient and continues to be compliant with all applicable regulations in preparation for FRIB user operation in 2022.

Melanie brings over 20 years of experience to FRIB. She has a wealth of senior HR experience in public universities, in the private sector, and in the public sector with faculty, academic staff, and support staff in complex regulatory environments. She spent close to a decade in academia, serving as director in academic human resources in the MSU Office of the Provost and as director of academic personnel at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In the private sector, she most recently was the director of human resources at the Capital Area Transportation Authority in Lansing, Michigan. In addition, she has served as the director of human resources for a mid-size architecture and engineering firm, and worked in a national insurance company.

Melanie started her HR career in the public sector in the Virginia Department of Transportation. She has developed numerous policies and programs, and has presented at national and state conferences on recruiting, diversity, and interviewing.

Melanie holds a master of science degree in human resources from Western Carolina University and a bachelor of science degree in chemistry from Virginia Union University.
