Research Associate - Data Acquisition

The Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) is a U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science (DOE-SC) user facility for nuclear science. Hosting the most powerful heavy-ion accelerator, FRIB will provide intense beams of rare isotopes (that is, short-lived nuclei not normally found on Earth). FRIB will enable scientists to make discoveries about the properties of these rare isotopes in order to better understand the physics of atomic nuclei, nuclear astrophysics, fundamental interactions, and applications of rare isotopes benefitting society.

FRIB will commence scientific user operation in May of 2022. FRIB is funded by DOE-SC, Michigan State University (MSU), and the State of Michigan, with user facility operation supported by the DOE-SC Office of Nuclear Physics. Since 2010, MSU’s nuclear physics graduate program is ranked No. 1 in the nation, according to U.S. News and World Report’s rankings of graduate programs.

Position overview

The primary mission of FRIB's Scientific Data Acquisition Group is to provide support for the FRIB Scientific Experimental Department with data acquisition solutions and best practices and develop new tools for data taking and analysis. The FRIB Scientific Data Acquisition Group does all this while maintaining and supporting the detector system's integration and interfacing.

Major position responsibilities

The primary function of this position is to perform work in order to develop and support software for digital acquisition systems within the existing FRIB data acquisition and analysis frameworks. The project typically requires knowledge of object-oriented programming languages. In addition to development and maintenance of software, support of experimenters in the use of FRIB data acquisition and analysis tools for the success in their scientific endeavors is required. The candidate will be expected to work in a team environment and author journal articles, conference papers, and technical reports.

Qualifications

Required

  • The successful candidate must have an advance degree in Physics, Computer Science, or a related field and should have demonstrated significant knowledge and expertise in object-oriented programming and languages such as C, C++, Python
  • Considerable knowledge and expertise in maintenance software, such as Git
  • The ability to perform and support development in a collaborative environment is required, including excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work with export-controlled technology

Desired

  • Additional capabilities, such as a PhD in nuclear or high-energy physics or related areas, one or more years working with digital front ends with sampling speeds higher than 100 MSPS, and experience with NSCLDAQ and SpecTcl frameworks are a plus.
