Superconducting Mechanical Design Engineer III

The Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) is a U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science (DOE-SC) user facility for nuclear science. Hosting the most powerful heavy-ion accelerator, FRIB will provide intense beams of rare isotopes (that is, short-lived nuclei not normally found on Earth). FRIB will enable scientists to make discoveries about the properties of these rare isotopes in order to better understand the physics of atomic nuclei, nuclear astrophysics, fundamental interactions, and applications of rare isotopes benefitting society.

FRIB will commence scientific user operation in May of 2022. FRIB is funded by DOE-SC, Michigan State University (MSU), and the State of Michigan, with user facility operation supported by the DOE-SC Office of Nuclear Physics. Since 2010, MSU’s nuclear physics graduate program is ranked No. 1 in the nation, according to U.S. News and World Report’s rankings of graduate programs.

Purpose

The Superconducting Mechanical Design Engineer III will execute work to meet superconducting radio frequency (SRF) and superconducting magnet project milestones and performance objectives (cost, scope, and schedule).

Assigned scope

Support the Superconducting Cryogenic Design Team on SRF and superconducting magnet design, production fabrication, and assembly.

Major position responsibilities

  • Serve as project leader and subject matter expert in reviewing design layouts, budgets, project documentation, construction, testing, modification of hardware and software and/or the installation of sub-systems [35%]
  • Present design solutions to stakeholders and convene design reviews to obtain stakeholder feedback and endorsement [35%]
  • Produce and document effective design solutions by developing concepts, performing engineering calculations and creating CAD designs/details [10%]
  • Perform calculations and analysis of complex data and provide engineering support for fabrication, assembly, and commissioning of technical equipment [10%]
  • Able to make presentation graphics of design and communicate what is needed to advance the design and start construction [10%]

Qualifications

Required

  • A bachelor degree in engineering or physics; five to eight years of related or progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in physics, electronics, mechanical and/or electrical drafting, fabrication techniques, heat transfer, cryogenics and computer systems; and may require experience in the use of CAD and/or related engineering systems, including file transfer; experience in the use of exotic metals, including knowledge of their properties, in the fabrication and assembly of sophisticated research equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • The job requires moderate physical effort and involves fine manual dexterity during fabrication of equipment and viewing a CRT screen 26% to 75% of the time.

Desired

  • Mechanical engineering degree with eight to ten years of experience
  • Experience with system-level detailing and checking mechanical drawings for production
  • Experience with SolidWorks and PDM Systems
  • Experience in the design, fabrication and complex assembly of superconducting equipment
  • Experience in fabrication techniques, cryogenic systems, installation and operations setup, electronics, mechanical and electronic drafting, and computer systems
  • Ability to work with export-controlled materials
