Superconducting Mechanical Design Engineer II

The Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) is a U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science (DOE-SC) user facility for nuclear science. Hosting the most powerful heavy-ion accelerator, FRIB will provide intense beams of rare isotopes (that is, short-lived nuclei not normally found on Earth). FRIB will enable scientists to make discoveries about the properties of these rare isotopes in order to better understand the physics of atomic nuclei, nuclear astrophysics, fundamental interactions, and applications of rare isotopes benefitting society.

FRIB will commence scientific user operation in May of 2022. FRIB is funded by DOE-SC, Michigan State University (MSU), and the State of Michigan, with user facility operation supported by the DOE-SC Office of Nuclear Physics. Since 2010, MSU’s nuclear physics graduate program is ranked No. 1 in the nation, according to U.S. News and World Report’s rankings of graduate programs.

Purpose

The Superconducting Mechanical Design Engineer II will execute work to meet superconducting cryomodule and magnets project milestones and performance objectives (cost, scope, and schedule).

Assigned scope

Support the Superconducting Mechanical Design Group on magnet design, production fabrication, and assembly.

Major position responsibilities

  • Produce system-level models and 2-D and 3-D drawings in order to support engineering design of technical equipment (includes the extensive use of GD&T) [50%]
  • Present design solutions to stakeholders and convene design reviews to obtain stakeholder feedback and endorsement [10%]
  • Produce and document effective design solutions by developing system-level models and concepts and creating CAD designs/details [10%]
  • Provide support for fabrication, assembly, and commissioning of technical equipment [10%]
  • Interact with project leader and subject matter experts to transform technical requirements into design solutions [10%]
  • Assist project leader and subject matter experts in reviewing design layouts, budgets, project documentation, construction, testing, modification of hardware and software and/or the installation of sub-systems [5%]
  • Provide technical direction to support staff and students [5%]

Qualifications

Required

  • A bachelor degree in engineering or physics; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in fabrication techniques, cryogenic systems, electronics, mechanical and electronic drafting and computer systems; and may require experience in the use of CAD and/or related engineering systems, including file transfer; experience in the use of exotic metals, including knowledge of their properties, in the fabrication and assembly of sophisticated research equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Desired

  • Three years of experience with CAD/CAE
  • Three years of experience with SolidWorks
  • Three years of experience in the design and fabrication of sophisticated research equipment
  • One to two years of experience in fabrication techniques, cryogenic systems, electronics, mechanical and electronic drafting, and computer systems
  • Ability to work with export-controlled materials
