Construction workers began installing structural steel today for the top of the linear accelerator tunnel. The beams used in the installation are the heaviest steel beams manufactured in the United States, weighing in at 12 tons each. Sixty-one beams and seven columns will be installed by the end of the week. The columns weigh in at 2.6 tons a piece. Once complete, the tunnel top will weigh around 915 tons.

Michigan State University (MSU) operates the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) as a user facility for the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science (DOE SC), with financial support from and furthering the mission of the DOE‑SC Office of Nuclear Physics. FRIB is registered to ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 27001, and ISO 45001.
