Building trades representatives discuss FRIB construction

Representatives from building trades organizations across Michigan met at FRIB on February 10 to discuss the role of building trades as FRIB begins construction.

Brad Bull, FRIB Conventional Facilities Division Director, hosted the event and gave a presentation outlining FRIB's status and plans for the start of civil construction. Ben Maibach III, Chairman and CEO, and Todd Ketola, Vice President, were in attendance from construction manager Barton Malow Company.

Representatives from many local and regional councils participated in the discussion, including Michigan Building and Construction Trades Council, Associated General Contractors of Michigan, Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters and Millwrights, Michigan Laborers' District Council, Southeastern Michigan Building and Construction Trades Council, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 665, Operating Engineers Local 324, and Plumbers & Pipefitters Local 333.

Utility relocation and site preparation work continues on the FRIB site. Pending positive reviews by MSU and the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science in reviews scheduled for March and April, excavation and construction of the FRIB buildings can start as early as May.
