FRIB completes installation of linear accelerator’s first folding segment

31 October 2019

In October, FRIB staff completed installation of the linear accelerator’s (linac) first folding segment (FS1). The first folding segment connects the first and second linac segments.

The installation work involved integrating several systems: accelerator physics, controls, magnet, power supply, vacuum, radio-frequency, and instrumentation.

FS1 will transport ion beams accelerated in the first linac segment and optimize the beams to inject into the second linac segment. The 24 cryomodules in the second linac segment will accelerate the beam to a higher energy.

The beam commissioning of the second linac segment is planned for spring 2020.
