FRIB’s target module assembly is complete and it has passed first mechanical tests.

The heavy-ion beam will travel through FRIB’s linear accelerator and hit the target to create rare isotopes. The target module uses a rotating carbon target disk system inside a copper heat exchanger. 

While several mechanical tests of the target module have already been performed, preparations are now under way to test it at full power.

Michigan State University (MSU) operates the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) as a user facility for the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science(link is external) (DOE SC), with financial support from and furthering the mission of the DOE‑SC Office of Nuclear Physics.
