As Accelerator Systems Division director, Jie Wei directs the design, fabrication, installation, commissioning, and operations of all aspects of FRIB accelerator systems safely and within the approved budget and schedule. FRIB accelerator systems include ion sources, front-end, linear accelerator, targetry, fragment separator, beam delivery, the cryogenic plant, and supporting systems.

Jie has 33 years of research, management, and teaching experience on particle accelerators, major science projects, and major user facilities. His leadership experience includes design, research and development, construction, and commissioning of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), the interaction-region design of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the design, research and development, and construction of the Spallation Neutrino Source (SNS) ring, and the leadership of the design, research, and development of the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) project.

Jie led the accelerator design and construction team for the SNS accumulator ring for seven years with a staff of about 100 and budget of $135 million. As director of the CSNS project, he managed an approved equipment budget of 1.9 billion CNY (about $280 million in U.S. dollars).

Jie is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the first recipient of the ACFA/IPAC prize for original contributions in the accelerator field with no age limit "for his exceptionally creative contributions to the design, construction and commissioning of circular accelerators, in particular RHIC, SNS, LHC as well as the design of CSNS, and for numerous significant developments in the field of beam dynamics."

Jie earned a PhD in Physics at State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1989.
