ASAC review completed 30 May to 1 June

09 June 2017

The fifteenth meeting of the FRIB Accelerator Systems Advisory Committee (ASAC) was held from 30 May to 1 June.

This meeting was held without its esteemed chair Dr. Satoshi Ozaki, who recently passed away. Dr. Ozaki was an inspiration to FRIB's Accelerator Systems Division (ASD), and his sage advice and keen interest in FRIB’s success will not be replaced.

The committee recognized the progress of FRIB ASD in construction and installation. In particular, ASAC recognized front-end installation and first beam commissioning in the upper Low Energy Beam Transport (LEBT). ASAC endorsed the progress on the vertical and lower LEBTs, the radio frequency quadrupole and the Medium Energy Beam Transport in final preparations for the Accelerator Readiness Review (ARR) in July.

The review committee answered all charge questions affirmatively.

ASAC also endorsed the nine ARRs planned, and also endorsed the recent reorganization of folding segment 2 magnet construction and adoption of room-temperature buncher modules. ASAC also recognized the validation of the lithium pump.

For the next review on 7-9 November, ASAC expects more developed plans for achieving the required accelerator availability and operational models for beam quantity and characteristics.
