The community is invited to two free upcoming events at FRIB featuring Harvard University Professor of Mathematics Noam Elkies. First, a public talk on “Canonical Forms: A Mathematician’s View of Musical Canons” on 10 December. On 14 December, Elkies and MSU College of Music Associate Professor Young Hyun Cho will perform a piano recital

Elkies is the youngest tenured professor at Harvard University. He researches elliptic curves, lattices, and other aspects of the theory of numbers. His talk will begin at 8 p.m. Partial financial support is provided by the MSU Office of the Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies. Elkies will be joined on 14 December by Young Hyun Cho, an associate professor of piano at Michigan State University. The four-hands piano recital will begin at 5:30 p.m. More information about the performance can be found on the event webpage.

Both events will take place in Room 1300 FRIB Laboratory, 640 South Shaw Lane, on Michigan State University’s campus. Parking will be available in the Shaw Lane and Wharton Center parking ramps.

These events are hosted by the Advanced Studies Gateway at FRIB. The Advanced Studies Gateway is an initiative at FRIB that brings together researchers, innovators, creative thinkers, artists, and performers from all fields and strengthens ties between Michigan State University and the community. Activities include research workshops as well as public talks, concerts, and special events that are free and open to the public.
