FRIB AND NSCL OPEN HOUSE 2018

The public is invited to get behind the scenes at FRIB and the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) during an open house scheduled for Saturday, 18 August. The event will run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with last tours starting at 4 p.m. At the open house, attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about FRIB and NSCL, rare isotope research, and view FRIB project progress.

The open house is free and open to all ages, and no appointment is necessary to participate.

What you can do at the open house:

  • Tour the FRIB linear accelerator tunnel. (Additional tour information can be found here.) (Estimated duration: 15 minutes per tour.)
  • Explore the fields of FRIB research with several hands-on activities and demonstrations. A list of the scheduled activities and demonstrations can be found here. (Estimated duration: 5 minutes each.)
  • Meet nuclear scientists as they talk about their work on the frontiers of rare-isotope research. (Duration for talks: 15 minutes + questions. Duration for panel: 30 minutes)
  • Tour the currently operational experimental areas in the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory that will be used in FRIB experiments. (Additional tour information can be found here.) (Estimated duration: 30 minutes per tour.)
  • Enjoy some educational videos in the "FRIB Theater." (Duration: 20 minutes to view entire loop once.)

Four different presentations are scheduled throughout the day, as well as a panel discussion on careers:

  • 11:30 a.m.: "Behind the Scenes at the FRIB Laboratory" with Deputy Laboratory Director Paul Mantica. (Duration: 15 minutes + questions.)
  • 12:30 p.m.: "FRIB Science: Bringing the Stars Down to Earth" with Associate Professor of Physics, and Associate Director for Education and Outreach Artemis Spyrou. (Duration: 15 minutes + questions.)
  • 1:30 p.m.: "People at FRIB: Careers in Science, Engineering, and Technology" (panel discussion about careers) with Outreach Coordinator Zachary Constan, Staff Engineer Sam Miller, Nuclear Chemistry Graduate Student Paige Abel, Accelerator Engineer – Cyclotron Operator Marty Mugerian, and Scheduling and Materials Coordinator Susan LeCureux. (Duration: 30 minutes.)
  • 2:30 p.m.: "FRIB Science: Serving the National Science Community" with Manager for User Relations Jill Berryman. (Duration: 15 minutes + questions.)
  • 3:30 p.m.: "Behind the Scenes at the FRIB Laboratory" with NSCL Director Brad Sherrill. (Duration: 15 minutes + questions.)

The last tours will start at 4 p.m., meaning attendees will have until 5 p.m. to tour and participate in the events. Free parking will be available in both the Shaw Lane and Wharton Center parking ramps, and accessible parking will be available near the event entrances.

Additional important open house reminders and guidelines:

  • Photography and video will only be allowed at a designated place on the NSCL tour and in other open house areas. Designated spaces will be clearly marked. No photos or video will be allowed on the FRIB tour. Please follow all signs and posted placards.
  • FRIB is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
