“China has maintained a relatively small nuclear force and restrained nuclear policy for decades. However, it has more recently changed its nuclear policy and forces. Why and how? Where is China headed and how does its growing nuclear capability challenge U.S. strategy, extended deterrence, and U.S.-PRC defense relations?”

Michael Chase
Michael Chase is a senior political scientist with the RAND Corporation in Arlington, Virginia. He previously served as deputy assistant secretary of defense for China, Taiwan, and Mongolia. He holds a PhD from Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). He has published widely on the Chinese military and U.S. security policy in the Indo-Pacific region.
