FRIB Career Experience Internship Program
FRIB offers Career Experience Internships for MSU undergraduate students seeking hands-on experience at a world-leading research facility.
As home to the most powerful rare-isotope accelerator, FRIB provides a dynamic environment where students build practical skills and prepare for the workforce.
FRIB has a tradition of hosting undergraduate interns in hands-on learning experiences that support career readiness. Each year, more than 100 students participate in these opportunities. The Career Experience Internship Program builds on this foundation by organizing these experiences within a structured framework aligned with the MSU Internship Success Kit.
Internship opportunities span a wide range of disciplines, including physics, chemistry, engineering, computer science, project management, and business operations. Through real-world projects and mentorship from leading researchers and professionals, interns gain the experience, confidence, and professional connections needed to take the next step in their careers.
FRIB internships are designed to support MSU’s Green and White Council career-readiness goals. Interns develop key competencies such as communication and professionalism, critical thinking and problem-solving, artificial intelligence (AI) and digital skills, strong disciplinary foundations, and global leadership.

Structured support from day one
The FRIB Career Experience Internship Program is structured following the MSU Internship Success Kit. Interns begin with a guided onboarding process that sets clear expectations and goals for success. In the first week, interns work with their supervisor to establish learning objectives and define how their work connects to career development. Regular check-ins, including mid-internship and final evaluations, provide feedback, track progress, and support continued growth throughout the experience.
Internships typically last a minimum of six weeks and may extend up to one year, in alignment with MSU guidelines. Opportunities are posted on Handshake and include defined learning goals and expected outcomes to ensure a meaningful and structured experience.
