TALENT Course 6 Summer School held 3-21 June at FRIB

24 June 2019

FRIB hosted the second Training in Advanced Low Energy Nuclear Theory (TALENT) Course 6 from 3-21 June. Talent Course 6 investigates the theory for exploring nuclear reaction experiments. This is the second TALENT Course 6 held. The first one was held in 2013 at The Grand Accélérateur National d’Ions Lourds in Caen, France. The course was held this year at FRIB due to the increased relevance to the FRIB science program. The TALENT initiative aims to train graduate students and young researchers in low-energy nuclear theory.

TALENT Course 6 included sixteen graduate students. Twelve students were from the United States, and four were from Asia, Europe, and Africa. The students were introduced to modern methods of describing nuclear reactions. They developed an understanding of methods employed in simplifying the many-body reaction problem. They also gained experience with describing nuclear reaction data.

Attendees had the chance to investigate the connections between reaction theory and reaction observables. The increase in capabilities at rare isotope beam facilities grants access to vast new exotic phenomena. A strong grasp of theory and a connection to experiment is critical for aspiring nuclear scientists.

“TALENT Course 6 is crucial because it prepares attendees for the cutting-edge nuclear science relevant to facilities such as FRIB,” said Filomena Nunes, FRIB Theory Alliance managing director. “It is beneficial to have it at FRIB because we are at the forefront of rare isotope nuclear science today.”

The ultimate goal of TALENT is to develop a program of excellence in nuclear theory. It does so by providing unique training addressing the needs of the nuclear physics community.

The FRIB Theory Alliance (FRIB-TA) is a coalition of scientists from universities and national laboratories who seek to foster advancements in theory related to diverse areas of FRIB science; optimize the coupling between theory and experiment; and stimulate the field by creating permanent theory positions across the country, attracting young talent through the national FRIB Theory Fellow Program, fostering interdisciplinary collaborations, and shepherding international initiatives.
