FRIB and Los Alamos National Laboratory
High-intensity proton ion source
Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) provided the ion source that allowed FRIB to successfully demonstrate the performance of the liquid-lithium charge stripper.
FRIB borrowed a high-intensity low-energy demonstration accelerator (LEDA) proton ion source from LANL to test the performance of the liquid-lithium demonstration film developed at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL). The goal was to deposit on the lithium film a beam with similar power densities as will be encountered with FRIB’s uranium beams.
The ion-source beamline was modified to interface with the ANL lithium installation and to obtain a small spot at the position of the lithium film.
