FRIB hosted the 2023 Institute for Nuclear Science to Inspire the next Generation of a Highly Trained workforce (INSIGHT) Workshop 10-11 May. The workshop brought together nearly 70 faculty and students representing national research traineeship programs funded by the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science Office of Nuclear Physics. The traineeships were created to broaden and diversify the nuclear physics workforce.
At the workshop, attendees discussed best practices and participated in student mentoring and networking opportunities.
Founded in 2020, INSIGHT is a resource center for a network of traineeship programs located at various institutions in the U.S. Each traineeship program partners with a number of Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs). INSIGHT measures progress and coordinates longitudinal tracking of trainees’ progression towards science and technology careers.
INSIGHT also offers its own traineeship program for students from MSIs, leveraging the scientific opportunities at FRIB. Currently, INSIGHT supports 18 traineeship programs across the U.S. and partners directly with 12 MSIs.
